Line of Thoughts is a film consisting of 9 chapters or "Thoughts" that lead along the US Mexican border, from Border Field State Park in California to the Gulf of Mexico in Texas. Engelmann puts a spotlight on her sometimes coincidental, sometimes intended itineraries, leading to places that experiment¬ with alternative or utopian societal forms, such as Arcosanti in Arizona, Llano del Rio in California or even—as in Bio¬sphere 2—exploring life on foreign planets scientifically and experimentally. The Thoughts cross borders, social statuses, the here and there, the worldly, the believed, they try to escape. The Monarch butterfly acts as a symbol of crossing these different worlds and borders, and transforms into different shapes to find life and kin—here and there.
